Paul Klee talks about drawing as taking a line for a walk, a phrase that has always stuck. Mowing the lawn becomes drawing. Brushing the dog, giving a massage. Drawing is about describing shape, form, character. Feeling form. Having been obsessed with oil painting over recent years my pencils have remained largely unsharpened. Line drawing has been overtaken by finding form with colour. There is something very exciting about the tension of a pencil line, pressing harder, letting go, changing speed. Perhaps the lack of drawing is due in part to the distinct lack of life drawing models available in rural South Lanarkshire! I think it is time for a return to drawing!
